What are the NCRA (National Court Reporters Association) credentials and acronyms attained by captioners?

  • All certifications require members to maintain membership and continuing education credits to remain certified.
CRC Certified Realtime Captioner (** This certification encompasses the former CCP (Certified CART Provider) and the CBC (Certified Broadcast Captioner) certifications
Captioners must attend a training workshop, pass written knowledge (WK) test & pass an unedited realtime steno test @ 180 words per minute @ 96% accuracy
CRR Certified Realtime Reporter. Pass a WK legal test & unedited Realtime test @ 200 wpm @ 96% accuracy
RDR Registered Diplomat Reporter, RMR prerequisite. Pass a very advanced WK test. The highest credential in the industry.
RMR Registered Merit Reporter, RPR prerequisite. Pass an advanced WK test & 3 skills tests up to @ 260 wpm @ 96% accuracy
RPR Registered Professional Reporter. Pass a (WK) legal test, 3 skills tests up to @ 225 wpm @ 96% accuracy
CSR(A) Certified Shorthand Reporter (Alberta) with the Alberta Shorthand Reporters Association.
CRI Certified Reporting Instructor. For teachers of court reporting, developed to encourage excellence in the educational programs that prepare tomorrow's court reporters.
CPE Certified Program Evaluator. Training to evaluate and certify undergraduate court reporting programs.
